About Us

Capital Cats and Canines is a family run pet care business which was established in 2010 by Vivienne Moir, BSc (Hons), MSc.

Vivienne was previously working in fast-paced and demanding fundraising/communications departments from working at The Scottish Wildlife Trust, WWF Scotland, National Museums of Scotland and Queen Margaret University. She learnt first-hand, and from others, the struggles that came with trying to source flexible and quality pet care whilst they were working full time.

This experience prompted Vivienne to realise her dream of working with animals and set up her own pet sitting/dog walking business. She has combined her previous background in Zoology along with her second degree from Strathclyde Business School to bring her business to fruition.

Richard, Vivienne’s partner, then joined Capital Cats and Canines in 2019 to work full time alongside her as the business grew. He previously worked as a System Test Lead within the IT sector of Life, Pensions and Insurance but had been keen to join the business for some time, as even on his “days off” he was helping with dog and pet care!

Capital Cats and Canines provide high quality pet care within the North of Edinburgh. We believe in ensuring that your pet comes first—from feeding to exercising, playing and socialising. We want the best for your pets. This will ensure a happy and healthy pet is there to greet you when you come home.

Capital Cats and Canines will ensure that all your pet’s requirements are taken care of by our reliable, responsible and dedicated pet sitters. We treat every pet as if they were part of our own family.

Vivienne and Richard have a rescue dog, Juno, they adopted from Romania, via the charity Bid to Save a Stray. She loves to keep us on our toes along with our two rescue cats, Pebbles and Cosmo from Cats Protection League. They are now living their best lives too!

Our services

Dog walking

Capital Cats and Canines focus on the individual welfare needs of each dog within our care. We specialise in providing a more personalised approach to dog walking allowing each pet to have the attention and exercise they deserve on each walk. We focus on walking groups of dogs (of up to six) and our minimum walk is an hour and maximum is 1.5hrs in quieter greenspaces within/outskirts of Edinburgh.

Sometimes dogs can be out with us for up to 2.5 hours due to picking up and dropping off times. We usually collect dogs between 10am-2pm for their daily walks depending on logistics, as well as traffic/roadworks in Edinburgh.

We have full liability insurance with Protectivity pet insurance. All dogs require to be vaccinated and flea/worming treatments adhered to.

We are also registered with City of Edinburgh Council as Professional dog walkers and adhere to all the rules and regulations.

Puppy visits and socialisation

We can help raise your puppy into a happy, well-adjusted Edinburgh city dog. Capital Cats and Canines can provide you with an individual socialisation checklist to monitor your puppy’s progress. This can be discussed at initial consultation. This service also includes feeding, exercising and toileting along with basic obedience training.

We ensure that puppies do not join our group walks too quickly as we understand that their bones and joints are still forming. They need much less exercise than fully grown dogs and a good rule of thumb is a ratio of 5 minutes exercise per month of age (up to twice a day until puppy is fully grown), i.e. 15 mins (twice a day) when 3 months old; 20 mins when 4 months old, and so on.

We do have puppy slings so that we can introduce them gently into the group walks along with helping to socialise them in new environments.

Catsitting

We know how much cats love their home comforts, that’s why we believe the best way to take care of your pet is in their own environment. Whether you’re away on business, a weekend break or a long holiday, we’ll ensure that all of your cat’s needs are met. We use an unmarked vehicle so it doesn’t attract attention to your home when we visit and we can also bring in mail; place bins out and also open/shut curtains if required. Prices vary for additional cats.

Oatis

“I have known and used the catsitting services of Capital Cats and Canines for 7 years. They are outstanding and provide great loving care to both animals and humans; their trustworthiness in your property is impeccable. So far they have looked after three cats for me: Ollie, George and Oatis. I know they were treated like a member of their family. I wouldn’t use anyone else to look after my fur babies. I gained Oatis through Capital Cats and Canines to which I will forever be grateful for.”

“Vivienne has been our dog walker for 7 years. I know she takes great care of Skye and always plans a stimulating walk, filled with fun. This is obvious by the welcome Vivienne gets from Skye—so excited and happy to head out without a backward glance.”

Gus

“Vivienne has been looking after Gus for over 3 years now and has always treated him with the utmost care. Gus absolutely adores her and Richard and loves his group walks. Vivienne clearly cares very deeply for the pets she looks after, always making sure they are safe and having lots of fun out on walks. I couldn’t ask for anyone better to look after Gus. Vivienne has always been really flexible and goes the extra mile to make sure all the dogs get the best treatment. She really sets the bar high, the service she provides is very rare!”

Leo

“We regularly book Vivienne to look after our cat. She provides a wonderful, flexible and reliable catsitting service. She has taken great care of our cats over many years now. Blue, our previous cat, had medical issues which she always took great care of. He was relaxed and happy when we returned and I always felt he was in dedicated, gentle and kind hands, which meant we could be away and not worry too much. I can’t recommend Capital Cats and Canines highly enough! They are lovely, friendly, kind, caring, trustworthy, reliable and doing an amazing job. You always receive daily updates on how your pet is doing.”
